Wilhaeven - "Infinite Jest"
Paul Anthony returns to his Wilhaeven alias as a follow up to his recent appearance on Bill Brewster's Late Night Tales - Vespertine compilation as Canada High. A veteran who is always interested in the space between the beats, Anthony prefers to make music rather than talk about it. Billed as a sort of legacy art project, and mostly comprised of instrumental hip-hop tracks, "Infinite Jest" is referential yet modern. It's both a back-to-basics beat tape as well as a stylized abstraction of the old school boom bap sound. Facing the sophomore curse head-on, the Ottawa Canada native responds with a satisfying clutch of tracks, applying a deft Futurism to his obvious years spent in the lab.
"I remember when I started to replace my teenage vinyl with CDs. As much as I enjoyed the clean digital smoothness of the new format, something was missing. I realized that the vinyl hiss, clicks and rumbles in the intros and outros had become an important part of the music itself. Those imperfections mark the passage of time, and for me bring back memories and feelings just as strongly as an old photograph or film. I'm honoring that legacy through my own music on this record."
Indeed, the surface noise on "Infinite Jest" recalls long summer days, as if it exists in some half remembered dream. The slack horizontal pacing offers listeners escapism without having to step outside of their living room.
On the whole the album has been constructed with great care, and feels like a career-spanning look at a seasoned producer's life. "Infinite Jest" is loose, inventive, and playfully reminisces over those hazy days from our past.
BIOGRAPHY:

Paul got his start remixing electronic legends Mark Archer / Altern8, Si Begg, Unique 3, and Rhythmatic via UK based record label Mutate Records between 2010 and 2012. Aside from releasing music on dozens of labels around the world and playing gigs all over Canada, many of Paul's tracks have been featured in independent films, documentaries, MTV / NBC / CBC and BBC 4 television shows and gallery installations.
